Eric fights back tears as he talks of the “carnage” at the Route 91 Festival, which he played on Friday
Eric Church played the Grand Ole Opry earlier this week and got choked up talking about the lives that were lost at the Route 91 Harvest Festival over the weekend.
“This past Friday, I played the Harvest music festival in Vegas … 48 hours later, those places that I stood, it was carnage,” Church told the crowd. “Those were my people. Those were my fans.”
As he fought back tears, Eric admitted that he didn’t actually want to perform that night but changed his mind after seeing concertgoer Heather Melton being interviewed by Anderson Cooper. Heather’s husband Sonny died in the shooting, and Heather revealed that they went to the festival to see Eric, who she said was Sonny’s “guy.” She also revealed that they had tickets to go to Eric’s Opry show, and Eric said two seats in the house were left empty to honor the couple.
“The reason I’m here tonight is because of Heather and Sonny,” he said, before performing a new song he wrote, “Why Not Me.”
