  • North Carolina Tornado Rated Highly Unusual EF-U (REAL)

A tornado touched down in the small rural town of Jamesville, North Carolina, on Monday, and storm chaser Tommy Augustine captured photos and videos of it and reported it to the National Weather Service. The tornado didn’t cause any damage, which made it hard for experts to figure out its strength. The National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City gave it a rare EF-U rating, meaning “Enhanced Fujita-Unknown,” because they couldn’t estimate its wind speed without damaged buildings or trees to study. This rating is unusual since most tornadoes get an EF-0 to EF-5 rating based on the harm they cause. The tornado hit a very rural area, so no one was hurt, and no property was damaged. The National Weather Service relies on reports and pictures from people like Augustine to track storms, especially in places where damage is hard to find.
