  • Scientists Have Developed Way To Get Fertilizer From Urine (REAL

Stanford researchers have developed a prototype system that transforms human urine into valuable fertilizer using solar power. The device extracts ammonia from urine through a series of chambers and membranes, converting it into ammonium sulfate, a common fertilizer. The system uses electricity generated by solar panels and waste heat from the panels to speed up the process. Each person produces enough nitrogen in their urine to fertilize a garden. In regions like Uganda where fertilizer is expensive, the system could generate up to $4.13 per kilogram of recovered nitrogen. Beyond producing fertilizer, the system provides crucial sanitation by making wastewater safer to discharge or reuse for irrigation, which is vital since over 80-percent of wastewater goes untreated worldwide.
