Dwayne Johnson is stepping way outside his usual wheelhouse in “The Smashing Machine,” a gritty A24 biopic about UFC champ Mark Kerr. The first trailer just dropped, showing off what Johnson calls a chance to “push myself in ways that I’ve not pushed myself in the past.” Directed by Benny Safdie in his solo directorial debut, the film also stars Emily Blunt as Kerr’s wife, Dawn Staples, marking her second team-up with Johnson after Disney adventure flick“Jungle Cruise.” The story dives deep into Kerr’s career and personal struggles, some of which were first captured in HBO’s 2002 doc of the same name. “The Smashing Machine” hits theaters October 3rd.
