Fifty-five runners from 18 countries strapped on headlamps and headed underground in Garpenberg, Sweden, to run what is now the world's deepest certified marathon. The course ran more than 3,600 feet below the surface, deeper than both the world's tallest waterfall and the UK's highest mountain. Runners completed 11 laps in the hot, humid, and dusty conditions of an active mine. The event raised around $1 million for charity and was a joint venture between three companies. Guinness World Records confirmed the new title on March 11; the new record-holders beat the previous record for deepest marathon by a lot, too…itwas set in Germany at just over 1,600 feet underground.
