Did American Idol save the best for last?

Simon Cowell, the former Idol judge everyone loved to hate, has spoken out to Rolling Stone about the declining ratings of the one-time smash show and the country megastar that got her start on it.

“The awful stat is in stars created by these shows,” Simon says. “The last true breakout artist we had was Carrie Underwood on Idol. That was eight years ago.”

Though several artists have found success after Idol, none have been able to match the superstar status of the “Jesus Take the Wheel” singer, Simon says.

After Carrie’s performance of Heart’s “Alone” during her time on the show, the British judge famously predicted Carrie would win the show and go on to sell more albums that any other previous American Idol winner.

He was right.

Despite less-than-stellar ratings, American Idol will return in 2015 for its 14th season.

Meanwhile, X Factor, the show for which Simon left American Idol, has recently been cancelled by FOX.
