Guardians of the Galaxy proved to be out of this world at the weekend box office.

According to studio estimates Sunday, the action-packed sci-fi raked in a whopping $94 million in its debut weekend, breaking the record for the biggest opening of a movie in August.

Shattering that record, Guardians became the third largest opening in 2014 thus far, despite analysts’ projections that the movie would earn between $60 million and $75 million in America

Marvel announced at Comic-Con 2014 that the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy will debut in 2017.
